It didn't do this when I first installed XP Pro but for some time now when I shut down the first message that comes up is 'Closing Network Connections' As this is a stand alone home PC have I or some programme altered any settings that makes my machine think it is connected to a network?

Are you able to do a system restore?

Mine says this, even though sometimes it is standalone, but it is quick so it doesnt bother me.

However try having a look if there are any adapters under Network connections in XP.

I had exactly the same problem with an installation of XP Home.

I searched everywhere for an answer, but never found one. I re-installed some time ago and it hasn't happened since.

So it's not just me then. It's not really a problem, just a bit annoying not knowing what it refers to. It may be that it has always been there but I have so much on my computer now that shut down is slower.
Maybe it's always been there but once it was fast enough for me not to see it. I use system restore regularly. It makes no difference to the Network message.
Seicento, I guess a clean install would mean a speedier shut down. Be interesting to see if it starts showing as your shut down routine gets slower. Anyway, I'll leave it as one of lifes unanswered mysteries for now. I will however follow up on the suggestion of Gaz 25. Thanks guys.
