I want to install XP Pro and still keep my desktop settings
A friend intsalled a copy for me and now I want to install the original with SP2.
How do I uninstall old XP and install new XP?
I know XP is difficult to uninstall than previous versions of windows

I can do back of of my HDD, reformat and re-install
Would restoring my back up enable me to keep my original desktop settings including all software etc.
any clues?

Not easily. I really think that you should do a backup of all your data, find your program installation CDs and codes, and prepare to reformat / reinstall windows.

I'm not clear why you want to uninstall one copy of XP in order to install another. If you have XP on your computer you can upgrade it to SP2, usually without problems. What exactly are you trying to achieve?

FelixTCat - as I read it, the first version wasn't legit and SP2 will not install; hence the need to
install new XP
.
