XP Not Booting

  Goolie 00:52 02 Feb 2005

I have a friends computer that refuses to boot into windows Xp, and gives the following message: 'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\Sytem32\Config\System'

On arrival I noticed the Hard Drive clicking and rattling, so I presumed a dead hdd.

I have now fitted a replacement hard drive, have tried a clean install of xp,and on first reboot I get the same message as before.

Have tried this several times, and get the same result.

The New Hdd is ok, as I have tested in another pc, installed the same copy of windows with no prob's.

Any Ideas? Could it be a Bios Problem?

On a side note...long URLs and especially Microsoft ones can be pasted into here click here which generates a handy sized, unique address. ;-)))

Thanks for the links, looks like the disk controller, as the problem is occuring during clean install.

Is there anyway of testing this or is a new mainboard required?

Sorted this by updating the Bios, cheers.
