XP Keyboard Driver

I've just had to reinstall hal.dll on my Acer and this has forced my laptop to reinstall all the hardware (and I mean all, including the motheboard and upwards).

One side effect is the behaviour of the keyboard. Previously I could type away all day and rarely see the cursor jumping around the screen. Now the cursor jumps around all the time as I type (I'm a sloppy typer). I see the same effect when I run Linux but never had it with XP before.

Any ideas why this is occuring - I've checked I have the latest keyboard driver.

Over sensitive touch pad settings ?

If this were a bog-standard PC I would look in Device Manager > Mouse and reduce the "mouse speed."
(It sort of drops a gear from the XP default setting).
With luck there will be a similar facility for the touch pad.

Thanks for the suggestions. After your comments I noticed the touch pad icon had disappeared, so I reinstalled the software, adjusted the settings and all is well. Many thanks.
