XP installed twice!

  dalglish 21:47 22 Feb 2005

Hi all

When I discovered a system file was corrupt and syetem restore failed to work, I re-installed XP Home believing it would overwrite the existing XP installation and repair the file.
However, on boot-up, I am presented with choosing between both installations.
Would Partition magic be worth trying to erase one of the OS installations?

Any help welcome- thanks

Partition Magic can do it but so can XP. Go Start>right click My Computer and select Manage. From there select Disk Management. Also make sure you copy NTLDR an NTDETECT.COM to floppy just in case you delete them. They will be in root of C:\. Hope this helps

thanks Zeppelin.
Have tried Disk Management but it does not list out the two OS' only that the disk is healthy and has 38Gb free- should the OS installation be visible?

You can do it by editing the Boot INI file.

The links do not work.
If you put Edit boot ini file into google it is the first link at the top.

The links do not work alan227 because they have to be lets say edited slightly a knowledge based article after the .com forward slash has to be> ?kbid=123456 the number being the number relative to the article,i hope that makes sence.........

You might want to open your c:\boot.ini file, then copy and paste the contents here, for someone to look at where the 2 copies of XP are installed. Then you can have a better idea of what to remove.
