xp installation problems

i've been having all kinds of problems recently and ultimately decided to reinstall windows from scratch (machine specs athlon xp2500+, 1024mb ram, 60gb hdd). Windows setup gets as far as the partition manager, then when i try to go any further tells me that the partition i've chosen (all are ntfs) is unsuitable for windows. Any ideas would be much appreciated!
