I understand that that XP Home Edition has a back up facility that must be accessed from the disk .... How can i access it can someone please advise

Put your XP disc in and click exit. Go to Start /Run and type valueadd\msft\ntbackup. then double click ntbackup

The reason you have to install it yourself is because Home, unlike XP Pro, doesn't install Backup by default.But to backup to a CD-R you'll have to create a folder, drag the files you wish to backup to it and then burn the folder's contents to disk.
