XP HDD complete clean-up

  mick73 13:47 24 Oct 2009

I am running XP home edition. The hard drive is completely full but for a few hundred mgb. Its capacity is 18g. I did the reinstall using the installation disc and it only gave me 1,8gig free space.Apparently this method does not remove files, How do I completely clean the drive and will I have any problems reinstalling if successful. Grateful for any help, Mick.

When you boot from the XP CD and it saerches the drive for previous versions of XP makes sure you select the option to DElete the partition or format the partition prior to installing XP.

Warning ALL data on the drive will be lost.

And will that clear all the music files etc.?

  Fruit Bat /\0/\ 14:18 24 Oct 2009

Yes it will wipe the whole drive before installing XP

O.K. Now, should I choose Upgrade or new installation?

  mick73 16:36 24 Oct 2009

I chose new installation and it seems to have cleaned the drive alright, but I still have only 2.55gb free space from 18.6gb drive. Is this normal?
And thank you for your help, Mick.

Nope, Search still finding music files etc.
Where did I go wrong....

as Fruit Bat /\0/\ says you need to do a complete format. Use the full format option not the quick format.

  mick73 17:46 24 Oct 2009

I didn`t see the option for full or quick format.
It just said deleting the partition will clear all files

  howard64 17:48 24 Oct 2009

you should boot from the cd and remove existing partition[s] then you should be given the format menu.

I did that but didn`t see any format menu. I`ll give it another go...
