XP hangs on shutdown

More often than not, my PC running XP Home SP3, is now hanging on shutdown. It clears the desktop, goes to Windows "saving your settings" screen, then into "windows is shutting down" screen where it hangs indefinately. This might not be connected, but I'm also finding internet page loading extremely slow at times (more than normal, even at peak times) & the Hdd LED barely shows any activity, it sort of slow pulses.

Any ideas?

Try command prompt and type in ipconfig /flushdns and press enter on the keyboard.
it should tell you dns cache has been flushed if so reboot the computer and see if it makes any difference.
Maybe turn off automatic updates to see if it could be that which is slowing down the switch off.
If no difference switch it back on again.
