XP hangs during boot

I have had my PC for a couple of years now, and for a good portion of that it has been running XP without problem. In the last couple of months, my PC has been hanging during the boot-up process.

The hang always occurs after the black "Windows XP" screen, and stops at either a black screen, the blue background of the login screen (even though I use the Welcome screen to login) with nothing on it or the same background with a hour glass mouse cursor.

After a couple of reboots where I'm asked whether I'd like to use the last known good configuration (which has no effect), the PC starts up and works fine with no problems.

This problem occured before SP2, but SP2 did not resolve the problem. I have also formatted and re-installed XP but this hasn't solved the problem. I've run the repair console and done the chkdsk /r but the problem persists.

How can I find out what's going wrong?

You could check the Event log for clues.

Start, right click My Computer, Manage.

Event Viewer, System. Highlight an Error, Action, Properties.

You can also click on the MS link for more information.

You say you have formatted and reinstalled XP and that still didnt fix it? sounds more like a hardware problem...have you had any electrical interference in the last couple of months this has happened? has anyone else looked at the PC? where is the PC situated? sorry for asking these questions but its important that the PC has not been hit by anything that could cause problems to the hardware...you maybe surprised but it can happen...just go to click here

No electrical interference that I know of, no-one else has touched my PC as it's in my bedroom. It is situated with broadband modem/router sat on top of it but this has always been the case.

The event viewer, performance logs and alerts provide no clues. No errors are logged at startup.

As for the computer stupidities mentioned, I'm slightly more optimistic of a more logical and productive solution.

Have you tried re-seating your graphics card and ram. Also checking the cables for the hard drive are fully home.

Another thing to check is to set your Bios to NON Plug and Play OS. That way the bios will set the hardware and not windows.

  Grouse ® 22:35 22 Sep 2004

restart computer and press f8 after BIOS message, and scroll to Enable Boot Logging..then during startup every technical event is stored in a log file named ( ntbtlog.txt ) you can then open this in your notepad and look for words such as "fail"

...............

  Grouse ® 22:42 22 Sep 2004

or you can go a slower route and go into "msconfig" that is "Start" then "Run" type in msconfig, and click on the startup tab, and untick everything & then tick each one after restart each time, to see if one of your programs are corrupted........or is causing conflicts.

  hugh-265156 22:47 22 Sep 2004

to rule out any programs starting automaticaly with windows as the culpret try this:

click 'start/run' type 'msconfig' and click ok. next click the 'start up' tab and make a note of everything listed here then untick everything apart from your AV and firewall and restart the computer. ignore the warning given at restart and tick 'dont show again' does it start up ok now? if so go back to msconfig again and put one tick back at a time and restart untill you find the problem maybe.

also see click here

apologies Grouse ®, am too slow :-)

No fails but a few did not load xxx driver - are these an issue?

  Grouse ® 00:46 24 Sep 2004

Hmmm! if you go to device manager are there any warnings against anything?

Because I notice it is not loading floppy disk driver!
