XP Freezing after dispalying Desktop

I turned on my Acer laptop this morning and XP Home first indicated a potential disk problem, checked the HDD and then loaded the Desktop. However at this point the only thing I can do is click on 'Start' which opens the menu but after that nothing works (I wanted to run System Restore).

I have PCLinuxOS 2007 dual booting and that's working fine (and it's how I'm accessing the Internet).

Any ideas how I can gain sufficient access to the XP partition to run System Restore? Or do you think it's more serious than that? XP closed down correctly the last time it was used.

I am only guessing, but I would say indication of a potential disk problem may well mean that your hard drive may be near the point of giving-up on you. I would take immediate steps, if you have not already done so, to backup all your important data pronto.

You might be able to access your XP in Safe mode?

I was trying to make it too complicated! Yes, f8 took me to Safe Mode where I ran 'last good configuration' and then used System Restore. All now back to normal!
