XP CD Not recognised on boot

  ened 14:05 24 Sep 2006

I have not touched the XP Installation CD since installing it some years ago.

I want to perform a complete re-format and clean installation.

However it won't boot from the CD.

I shows up as normal in My Computer but comrs up as invalid on Boot up.

Is there a way round this?

does autorun work on this drive, try another software cd to see if that autoruns. The other suggestion is to put in the disk and 2 click on setup.exe

I've got a 98 disc, which I could install, then use the xp disc from there but is there a limit to the size of disc 98 will install onto?

what make is the comp is it a pc or lap top, have you ever updated the bios ?

  Diemmess 15:50 24 Sep 2006

.........have you tried hitting enter more than once when it is showing as invalid?

98 is a long and tedious way round, but you might see if your computer will respond to booting from the disk and prove that the hardware and BIOS recognition is OK

is it a recovery disk or real windows disk

  ened 16:11 24 Sep 2006

bluelarger Real XPpro - pre sp1/2.
Diemmess I hive tried hitting 'any key' as requested - many times.

I have put it in my Laptop and the disc can be read on this but when you attempt to boot from it in gets the 'invalid ...' response as well.

So I feel something is damaged in the disc, which is strange because it hasn't been out of it's case for a long time.

What is the maximum size 98 will install onto?

Maximum size for 98?
Not sure, may depend on whether it is plain 98 or 98SE, but at worst it will not recognise part of your HD

RAM is important Max = 512MB. More than that and 98 goes haywire probably wont install either!

If your XP disk is genuine, The fault almost certainly lies elsewhere, and you have no guarantee that you can go further even with 98 installed.

If you are still looking for "odd" ways to boot your computer try booting from a 98 floppy and see if you can read the XP CD in its drive?
If you can, you might be able to type Drive "D:"\setup

Diemmess I do have a 98 floppy and go as far as the A prompt.
My dos is not very good - please tell me EXACTLY what do I need to type?
