Just boot from your XP cd,reformat and install,i assume you will need Vista drivers,i dont know as ive never moved from xp to vista.

Vista home basic is very basic. Arguably more basic than XP.

Why not just get the free beta of Windows 7?

I would'nt bother my XP laptop died so my kids bought me a Vista home basic one for Christmas (oh to have the XP one back)

hard drive space. Why not try a dual boot.

You will need a partition of 20Gb+. Boot from cd and select the partition for vista.Select new installation. If it is the correct disk it will load and you can select which OS yo want on boot up.

As for
" I have a laptop which has windows xp installed on it but i want to install vista basic onto the laptop, so do i need to un-install xp and do a fresh install of vista or will i be able to install vista over the top of xp."

will depend on which version of vista you have. e.g retail, upgrade or oem

Unless you have a well specified laptop then just don't do it.
