x.exe - is it safe/spyware ?

  timestar 08:37 11 Feb 2008

In Startup (using msconfig) I have found listed 2 files both called x.exe, both of which are located in c:/windows/system32, both set to run at startup. I have Googled "x.exe" and get conflicting information. Some sites say it is part of Windows and something to do with running Unix (which I don't). Others say it is spyware something to with popups and ads from a company called Maxifile. I run XP. Esett Smart Suite doesn't pick it up, neither does SuperAntiSpyware.

Any ideas?

I think that the balance of info is that this is probably malware of some sort. I suggest that you disable it from starting via msconfig and see if that has any effect. Try running A-Squared to see if that finds anything click here

click here click here Like you said some say its Ok others say remove it.I would imagine that they should not show in msconfig.I would untick them,And see what happens.

I have unticked both and re-started with apparently no ill effects.
