x.exe ??

Noticed that this process is running on my laptop and set to run on start up. Having Googled it some sites say it is a legitimate file (something to do with running Unix stuff), another site says it is Adware connected with a company called Maxfiles and should be removed. Any ideas?

click here but don't be hasty other programs say it is a proper program,But safer to run your Security programs.

Stop it from running at startup, see if you notice any changes, if not, then get rid of it if it's your own laptop and not a work laptop. Also do the usual up-to-date antivirus and antispyware scans.

This process is x.exe, rather than 5.x.exe referred to in your link - or are they the same thing? I run ESETT Smart Security which says laptop is clean, as do SuperAntiSpyware and AVG. Is it okay then?

Right-click on the exe, choose Properties > Version tab and see who the file belongs to, timestar.
