Xbox 360 to wireless/wired desktop

Hi, I have a wireless desktop in my lounge that connects to the wireless router upstairs. The desktop also has an old wired network card installed that is not being used.
My sons Xbox 360 is also in the lounge and he wants to get a live subscription.
Would it be possible for him to connect his Xbox 360, via ethernet cable to the old wired network card instead of buying an Xbox 360 Wireless Bridge in order to play live?

Any help would be appreciated as I don't know anything about networking.

Yes. before i got a router i had to connect to live via my pc - pc had to be on and connected to my ISP in order to connect to live - I used ICS (internet connection sharing). Its very easy to setup and works fine.
