Wrong CPU

  zoobie 11:35 14 Jan 2004

I just bought a AMD XP2600 Athlon CPU that's supposed to be running at 2.6gHz...but when I look in Belarc and other system hardware displays, it says it's a 1.15gHz AMD Athlon XP. What gives and are they trying to take me for a ride? Comments? Thx

An AMD XP2600 doesn't run at 2.6 Ghz. Its runs a 1.5 Ghz. So it correct.

The 2600 title refers to the claim that an AMD 1.5 performs the equivalent speed of an Intel 2.6....

Sorry a 2600 should run at 2133 MHz or 2083 MHz depending on the exact model. But it still doesn't run at 2600...

Sounds like the BIOS needs changing.

It depends upon which 2.6GHz CPU you have.

One runs at 2133MHz on a 266MHz FSB and the other at 2083MHz on a 333MHz FSB.

It is probably just the initial setup in the BIOS in order to start the CPU working. You now have to make the appropriate adjustments to to the FSB and multiplier, to make the CPU work at its specified speed.

What is bios needs changing? Every ap says it's a 1.5gHz speed. Thanks

In BIOS Frequency is the one to change to 133

  zoobie 12:11 14 Jan 2004

OK...I changed it to cpu frequency to 133 and now the ap says it's a 1.53gHz...Still, it's nowhere near the 2+gHz it's supposed to be. Should I set the cpu frequency in bios to 166? Thanks

There may be a multiplier jumper on the motherboard check the manual

BIOS Frequency should be 166.

  zoobie 12:53 14 Jan 2004

OK...I set the cpu frequency in bios to 166 and for the first time, it's reporting that, indeed, it's an AMD XP2600 now running at 1.91gHz. I didn't see a multiplier jumper in the manual...Anything else to speed this baby up? Thanks

Launch it outta the window, and get a P4 2.4Ghz 800FSB motherboard like a Epox 4-PGAI and then clock it to 3.1Ghz which is a stable run for a 2.4Ghz on my Machine.

The difference here being Intel sell there products branded correctly a 2.4Ghz is a 2.4Ghz. Whereas AMD XP2600 runs at 2.1Ghz (apparantly) and then you have to clock it up to the branded AMD XP2600.

Hope this helps
