Writing zero's to hard drives

I have had a problem with a Western Digital hard drive and downloaded a program to write zero's to the hard drive thus putting it back to its original state. Can I use the Western Digital software to put all hard drives back to their original state, or do I need each manufacturers software?

just use fdisk to format the drive delete and create partitions etc
