Of recent when I go onto the Internet or collect my e-mail I keep getting the following message

“Norton Internet Worm Protection has detected and blocked the intrusion attempt”

I have the latest updates from Norton & ran Norton Virus Checker my machine is clean. I have ran my stand by PC but that is not effected this makes me think I may have a virus or something lying dormant if so how do I get rid of it

I’m running Widows XP

If it's "detected and blocked the intrusion attempt", I don't see why you are worried. If it blocked it then you didn't get infected. If it detected it and let it through, it would definitely pick it up on a scan.

Every time it the message appears the mouse pointer goes into the top left hand corner

I don't think that you have a virus but try these on-line scans:

BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan
Make sure you tick AutoClean under Scan Options.

Panda ActiveScan
Make sure you tick Disinfect automatically under Scan Options.

Housecall at TrendMicro
Make sure you tick Auto Clean.
When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner

There is probably a weay of turning off these unnecessasry alerts in NIS.
