word temp files

When I am working on a Word 2003 document, some times after saving the document, a few ~*.* files get left behind - even after I have saved and closed the document.

Question - Why are these files created and can I delete them without affecting the actual copy of my document?

Word can be set to auto-save at a fixed time interval, this is a very useful facility but will create temp files. I leave mine until I do my once a week clean-up with Ccleaner when it deletes them.
(I have both Word and Excel set to save every two minutes, this saves me having to do a 'Ctrl s' every now and then.)

The temp files "should" be automatically deleted if you close word properly (whatever that is) click here

Tools - options - 'save' tab - tick 'allow background saves','Save autorecover info every' and then set a time.
