Word 2003 does not work with USB Flash Memory

When updating a document that is stored on a USB stick, Word loses it - The file is deleted from the stick.
Sometimes there is a ~tmp file that is Read only but I have been unable to open this file & it is not "seen" when trying to open in Word. There is no offer to recover from Word when restarting, including after a restart of the computer.
Sometimes there is a error message about closing the door of the CD Drive (oldies will remember when you did open a flap to insert floppies)
The problem has arisen on 2 PC's and a laptop and with 3 different USB sticks.
Work around is to copy the file from the stick to hard drive, update it and then copy back but this is tedious and needs very careful managing to ensure that the file on the stick is the updated one when it is taken to another computer.

I’ve just tried to read and write to/from and USB stick using Word, and it all works perfectly!

Perhaps you are just pulling out the stick rather than using the proper shut down to get the message: “You can now safely remove your device” message?

Are you sure that when you save, that you are really saving to the USB device and not the default drive and folder (which could be anywhere)?

What happens if you do “Save As” and see the file on the stick, then try to open the file you’ve just saved?
