For some reason when I shut down the PC it will not boot up.I have to switch it off at the wall then start up,This then starts up in safe mode forcing me to do a system restore.Any ideas what is causing this or how I put it right???

I would suggest that if this problem is a reoccurance to maybe reboot the system ??

I mean firstly if you can back up anything that needs to be backed up

Is this a recent problem?

can you do a system restore back to a point when you know that the pc was working fine?

Cortina, you need to post here what starts up on your computer. If you use hijackthis for example, then post here the results so that anyone here can help you further because there isn't enough information for anyone to help you.

when I shut down the PC it will not boot up.

Does any thing happen? Fans run lights on but no screen? Or does it stay totally dead?

On start up the PC throws up the "Windows"loading screen then goes blank. As far as system restore goes 9 times out of 10 it will not restore to an earlier seting.

Have you scanned your system with your av and antispyware programs.

If you can get into safe mode try Start>run>sfc /scannow

Don't forget to leave a space before /scannow and you will need your windows CD

Windows"loading screen

the one with the blue bar?

then a device driver problem.

Boot to safemode by keep pressing F8 as you first switch on. select safemode from the list.

In device manager uninstall the device drivers one at a time, starting with the graphics driver.
reboot let XP find and install new hardware and it will reinstall the drivers.
