WMP refuses to play wmv files

Does anyone know why I get this message when I try to play .wmv files in WMP 11 on my Vista machine?

"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

This happens with every .wmv file and the help page linked to the message doesn't seem to relate to anything relevant to the reason for the message. Some files are on external hard drives some, like the sample videos are on the the boot disk. Media Player Classic and VLC media player have no problem playing them.

I was wondering if some program installation has interfered with it as I had to uninstall Spybot S&D because it disabled the preview function in explorer when highlighting video files. Luckily I caught that right away, otherwise there would be another post asking why preview was disabled lol.
