wireless wifi device to access the internet?

  theDarkness 23:38 20 Oct 2006

I am wondering how i can get a wireless wifi device to access the net through a standard usb wifi adapter? the pc can detect the wifi adapter sending out messages, but the portable device cannot detect the adapter to connect to the internet. I have set up my modem to 'allow users to connect through this internet connection' from the control panel.

in my control panel network options in xp, i can see both my broadband modem and the wifi device (which is stated as 'connected' with a 'good signal'. testing the device it tells me it is successful at connecting to the pc SSID, so no need to change options on the device, but when I select 'connect to wifi adapter', it fails and cant find it. everything is installed ok.

is there anything in windows ive forgotten to do? i have a single user pc, not on a network.
