Wireless super slow on desktop, not laptop

I've got a wireless router connected through our DSL line in our main house, and a desktop with a PCI wireless adaptor in the nearby guesthouse.

The desktop in the guesthouse shows an "excellent" connection from the router, with all five bars green and 54 Mbps signal strength, but surfing is very slow and choppy there, almost to the point of dial-up or even worse. However, if I bring my laptop over there, sitting in the same place where the desktop is, the internet on the laptop cranks at full speed.

The specs on the desktop and laptop are virtually identical - AMD XP, 1 GB RAM, XP Home

Any ideas why that is or what to do?
