wireless router /adaptor

Please could someone help. I have installed a wireless modem/router from Netopia on my pc and installed a wireless usb adaptor on the computer upstairs. Everything is working except that I cannot get the adaptor to recognise the router. It shows an icon with a red cross through it. Click Wireless Network Properties connect using Santis W/Lan usb adaptor, all 4 boxes are checked. Click on Internet Protocol {TCP/IP) click properties the boxes are checked - obtain IP address auto and obtain DNS auto. When I click on Wireless Networks the "use windows to confirm my wireless network" box is checked, but nothing shows in the box. What do I have to do to get this to work? Both computers are using win xp, home downstairs and pro upstairs. The modem/router adsl and adaptor card are compatible.
thank you!

If you have any firewalls running disable them and try again.
