Wireless range extender possibly a thick question

  TomG 19:13 29 Aug 2006

I have a wireless network with 3 pcs, one of the pcs (which is in an upstairs bedroom) has occasional problems with the signal being dropped (the signal from the router has to go through 2 walls and a ceiling - no I cannot resite either the pc or the router).

I've been researching range extenders and think a D-Link DWL-G710 will do the trick.

Now the thick question - do I just uninstall the usb network adapter on the PC and then install the D-Link? I'm presuming that the range extender has a stronger signal than a usb adapter?

No, not at all; the range extender will re-route the signal between the router and its clients - as a middleman if you like. click here for the product page with manuals and specs. The Quick Install Guide is worth reading now.

now i'm a little (well 6 foot) confused - does the extender actually need to be connected to a pc (except for setup)?

No, once you've configured it, it will just sit there like a wireless router.

Thanks ade.h - a plain english one line answer! :=)

That's not often possible when talking about networks!
