wireless problem

I am using a netgear router to connect to the internet, and use it wireless, but recently i am getting very slow speeds, 840.65kbps and below so i contacted my ISP Fast.co.uk to see if they can help in any way, they claim as i am using it wireless they cannot do a lot for me as i need to be connected to the router via a Ethernet cable, i cannot connect to the router via a cable as it is in the kitchen and i would have to set the laptop on the floor to use it, anyway i tried a few speed testes with the cable but it makes no difference, so do i ring them back and claim to be using a cable to connect to the router or would they know i am bluffing, or do any of you have any other help you could give me.
