Wireless Network Range - improving

Has anyone got any ideas on how my wireless network's range could be extended? I have a Bluetake wifi card in my laptop, and a USB wifi adaptor (Wlan buddie, I think) on my desktop. Range currently stands at about 3 metres, or 1m through a wall...

You could add an additional access point. Run
a CAT5 cable from a switch port on your residential gateway to another
suitable part of the house. Locate the new access point there.

Should have said more about the environment... :)

I'm in a hall of residence, so I can only place things in my room. Am wanting to surf the net in other people's rooms, and the lounge area, but the range doesn't reach to there yet. Internet access is via a port on the wall, connected directly to my desktop.
