I have a Thomson speed touch 580 wireless modem/router, which has work fine, i forgot my password for getting onto settings of router, so i did a firmware upgrade, which solved the problem , new user name/password

there's a new settings interface for the router, which seems easy to use, got it setup running fine for the net, and networking, etc

when i try connect my other pc's in the house onto wireless network, i cant get assigned an IP address via DHCP from the router, the dhcp interface in the router settings says its working.

if i mannual put ip address/default gateway, etc in to the other pc's, i can then get them to connect to network, but cant get the internet to run on them??

tryed all firewalls off, no passwords, but still no joy

can anyone help?

here's my ipconfig info

There is something a bit odd about those details. If you are connecting via a router, it is the router that connects to the ISP and the computers get their access over the LAN from the router.

However, your PC seems to be connecting directly with a PPP connection to the ISP and getting the public IP address (172.189.153.150) that the router should be getting. Have you plugged a USB modem directly into the PC?

Your details also show:

"IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes"

suggesting that you have Internet Connection Sharing set up on one of the PC's internet connections. Unless you are running an ICS "client" PC from this one, ICS shouldn't be enabled.

I noticed i had internet conection enable, just playing wityh some settings trying to make it work

disable that, and the ppp stuff has now gone, but still no joy with getting net working on other pc's

when i setup wireless conection on the other pc,s it if leave it to find ip address automacticly, etc, the only thing it asks for is the default gateway, i tryed using the one below but no joy, no connection, if manual put the same settings in below it works, but no net(i change ip address buy 1 on last number)

the automactic wireless setup seems to be finding other ip address's etc from the dhcp, when i do this way, i cant even get a connection between pc.s

is there maybe something set on ny router settings that is giving out incorrent ip address etc?

here new info after turning of internet sharing

i also notice that i have a internet gateway on my main pc, is that normal for a modem/router?

  daves60r 09:53 11 Nov 2006

i was having a look the thomson router setup, just looking at settings on the easy wizard setup thing, the 1st choice is either

1. uk custom routed ppp connection(public subnet config etc) region uk

or

2. uk default routed ppp conection (use as uk default config) region uk

i choose the uk default option, is that right??

next choice

1.sevice provider - default (vpi/vci 0.38) 0r kingston comms (vpi/vci 1.50)

i choose the default one

next option

1. connection type - pppoa(default) or pppoe (for use with aol)

i choose the aol one cos my isp is aol

hsve i made the right options??

cheers

Perhaps an AOL user can confirm, but I was under the impression that all ADSL in the UK used PPPoA protocol (PPP over Asynchronous Transfer Mode), but you can try both options. The other settings appear to be OK.

right i have been playing with the router settings, the only way i can see to get the router to work is to enable "wds", now everything works fine, but can u use wep passwords on the network?

There shouldn't be a problem using WEP encryption in the wireless network. You will need to go through the procedure to "Connect" again which will involve entering the WEP key.

I wonder why enabling " Wireless Distribution System " for connecting one router to an access point or similar for range boosting should make it work ?
