Wireless network

Hi, I wonder if anyone would be able to help me. I have recently bought a new pc with a wireless adapter installed which I want to connect to a laptop. Both cards a capable of 54g standard but I cannot get them to connect at this speed. I have set them up as an ad-hoc network and before they both connect they are quite happy to say they will run at 54mbps. As soon as they are connected they drop to 11mbps and display the 802.11b standard in their connections.

I have a Belkin adapter in the laptop and an asus adapter in the desktop.

It may be that as they are from different manufacturers they don't quite manage to get on the "same wavelength" using 8011G and therefore drop to the lower speed of 80211B at which thay can talk to each other.

I thought that the idea of these "STANDARDS" was so that they would be able to talk to each other irrespective of who made them?
