Wireless Modem

Is it possible to have a stand alone 56K modem connected to a BT line situated in a spare office, no PC etc, and linked via WiFi to a laptop which I would be able to use in other parts of the building. I cannot access broadband yet as I am too far away from the exchange, in the sticks. I do not have any other pC's or wish to link to one, just the one laptop.
I have read a few articles in PC Advisor and am aware of security.

If this is feasable I would not be asking for a particular manufacturers name , just the name of the hardware.

Thanks in advance Russell.

I believe, the modem (a dumb peice of kit) would still need an operating system to work, hence a PC?

If you have a DECT (digital) cordless phone, you are also able to get a DECT modem, click here hence no wired connection. Is this the sort of thing that you are after?
