Not a very elegant solution but as a first indicator, when your pc is switched off and you think it might be a time when you are being "hijacked", check to see whether the traffic light on your gateway/router is blinking. This would indicate traffic not originating from you.

You should protect your wireless network with WEP or WAP encryption and possibly also MAC address filtering.

If I shut down all computers, my router will still show "activity" because there is always traffic from the internet - "nasties" looking for vulnerable ports in unprotected computers to infect - and that's without a wireless connection enabled.

Encryption settings should be in your router's setup.
