wireless connection but no internet with dell

  dcgrant 18:14 18 Aug 2007

I have two laptops at home, one Compaq Presario V6000 and one Dell D620 Latitude, the Dell running XP Professional and the Compaq Media Centre '05.

Both have inbuilt wireless and both are connected to a wireless network. However, when I open Internet Explorer, the Compaq works and I can use the internet but with the Dell, I can't get on the internet. With the Dell I am usually connected to a network at work but despite following the instructions to be able to use wireless at home, it doesn't work. Any ideas on why?

On the Dell machine,click start/run
Type in, services.msc
Scroll down to wireless zero and make sure the service is running.

Is the network at work wired or wireless ? If it is a work machine is it allowed to connect to other networks ? Can the Dell connect via ethernet cable ?

I'm connected with an ethernet cable at work but in the past I have used wireless with it so I know it can be done.

Have you got encryption enabled?
If yes, disable it temporarily via the router homepage, and see if you can connect.

If any firewalls are installed, uninstall them.

This includes Zone Alarm, Sygate, Kerio, Norton Internet Security, Zero Knowledge Freedom, Cisco VPN Client, F-Secure, McAfee Firewall, Trend Micro, Comodo, PC Tools Firewall Plus etc.

In many cases, disabling the firewall is not enough; you have to actually uninstall it.

Do not install or re-install the firewall until after you have the network functioning properly

It might be set up for static IP addresses for your work.

Start-run-cmd and type ipconfig

Right click in the window - select all - press the enter key to copy
