Hi...ime new to this wireless thing. I have a desktop pc and i want a wireless connection for mainly gaming. if i get a wireless router does it take the place of my modem, which is permanently in?

Yes it will take it's place, but your desktop may not connect to a wireless router without an adapter for example

If you are buying a new WIFI Router you can get an adapter to match it.

my isp is virgin media i have a broad band connection but my modem has cable modem wrote on it but i am plugged into a telephone socket so i dont know if i am ADSL OR CABLE ....sorry for my limited knowledge

hmmm...you have a a VM Cable Modem... you will need to buy a wireless router that connects to your cable modem via RJ45 (ethernet) i am the same i use a Netgear router that i haggled free with my laptop from currys last year >.>

the router would sit next to or connected to your VM Cable modem :D
