I have decided to extend my wired network into two more rooms. I only have 1 spare socket left on my router and I don’t want to get another hub. The 2 new connections will never be used at the same time so is it ok the wire them to the same socket on the router or must they be separate.

They must be separate

if the 2 connections are close together it is possible for you to daisy chain them ie wire to the first socket and then run a wire from there to the second one. As long as only 1 is used at a time you should have no problems.
