I have a dell inspiron 6400 with windows vista system,is it possible for me to reformat my hard drive in order to wipe the hard drive.I have already tried a recommended method of pressing the key f8 when starting and then pressing the "repair computer"-but the PC simply boots up as normal. Can anyone help.?

Wipe and reformat are two different things.

To wipe you would need something like eraser click here or Killdisk click here

If you have a vista CD, put it in the drive and let it start, when you get the option -select advanced--continue until you get the blue screen 'Terms and condititions', press F8 to accept, then press ESC, this will give you the option to reload your operating system, wipe a partition, Format partitions.

Only do this if you are sure you do not need any programs on your hard drive and you have all the CD's you need to re-build your system.

This is the 'Official' way to do it, however there are 3rd party software programs that will do the same job.
