Winfixer 2005

  Mike D 13:37 13 Jan 2006

I have just been asked to look at a PC which "has a Virus". When I started it up I find a program called Winfixer reporting that the PC needs spyware removal software and that there are 4906 serious errors that have been detected.

Before I start wondering around the pc like a psychopath with a hammer in a china shop, has anyone ever come across this program and is it a good guy or a baddie?

Thanks, just as I suspected.

A quick update.

I followed the advice in VoG™'s post and downloaded the recommended programmes. Before I installed and ran them I uninstalled Winfixer (obviously, being a nasty, it did not come out cleanly). Then using Adaware and Spybot I removed 400 critical objects (search assistant, shopping pop ups, browsing enhancers, kitchen sinks, you nameit...). Now everything looks OK. If this has worked then I'm happy. If I do have to resort to the original method (with all 45- yes 45- pages of tutorials), I will start a new thread.
