windows xp will not boot up

when I switch on my lap top it looks as though it is starting up but does not actually do so. I can only then start up in safe mode. I tries to "restore" back to a date in December but this did not help. Can any please assist?

Have you tried to boot the "Last Known Good Configuration"? Immediately after powering on, tap the "F8" key until the Boot Menu appears. Select the option to boot the "Last Known...etc".

thanks mgmcc for your prompt reply and assistance. That did the trick. Sorry to take so long to get back but it was my brother in laws lap top which was not working so by the time I contacted him and he got back to me to say your solution had fixed it, this is the earliest I could reply. Thanks again.
