Hi, when i tap f8 it doesnt bring up the list to select safe mode,

now it does something different when i switch it on, it automatically brings up a light blue screen and does a disk check?
something like

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)

it completes stage 1 and 2 then it says the:-
CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3) security verification completed.

after this nothing else happens, the screen stays the same.

Probably little consolation, but I had exactly the same problem a week ago. I resorted to taking it to an expert who put the C drive in another machine, copied the data then reformatted and reloaded all my stuff.

I did delve into various articles on the web, but got totally confused so for me, it was better to leave it to 'a man who knows'!

The boot sector of the Drive is Corrupt, you could try running TestDisk from a floppy. The partition table is corrupt click here

"after this nothing else happens, the screen stays the same"

that stage can take a significant amount of time (10 minutes or more). Try leaving it for a while!
