Windows XP Start Up Problem

  Lancelot1937 10:49 05 Aug 2003

Everything seems OK, but about one in four start-ups lock up, usually after the password has been put in. The computer locks up, and has to be swithched off and re-strated. Then it may take three attempts to work correctly. I have run RegEdit, Scan disc, and defrag. Any ideas?

Well, try sfc

go to

start, run and type in

sfc /scannow

and allow it to run its course; it may be that a file has been changed.

Also have a look at what is starting up: maybe there are too many progs starting and causing interference with one another. Disable any that you may not need.

Have a look at click here for optimisation details.

Many thanks. Running sfc /scannow it keeps asking for the original Windows XP Home Edition CD. The computer is nearly new, high spec, but came with W XP already installed, with a recovery disc supplied. Will that CD be enough to correct the problem?

Sorry, I don't know about your situation with the recovery disk - this will serve as a refresh and some more brains might get going on it.
