Windows XP shutdown problems

I have inherited a system running on Windows XP with SP2 which doesn't behave as I would expect. When it is put into Standby and then restarted instead of the previous screen appearing it seems to have logged off and a User has to be selected for logon. Also, when the system is Shutdown it immediately reboots itself so that the only way to shut down is to switch off the power. The system originally had Easy CD Basic installed which I understand is notorious for giving shutdown problems with Windows XP and this has been uninstalled yet the system still has the aforementioned problems. The Automatic Restart box in System Properties has been unticked. Are there any other settings which need to be changed?
