windows xp shutdown

i have upgraded my win 98 to win xp and now when i go to shutdown the computer all is fine but the computer sticks at the IT IS NOW SAFE TO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER scree and wont automatically switcth off... under win 98 my computer automacally switches off can some one help...

In XP you don't have to shut the computer down from the Start menu, you just press the power button on your computer, but first go to Control panel,power options,advanced, and under power buttons drop down menu choose what option you want to invoke.
