Received a phone call today from an Indian guy claiming to be calling in relation to out-of-date software on my computer. He directed me to event viewer in windows pointing out the error messages and claiming that this was because XP and other software was reporting that I needed to renew various licenses. He claimed to be able to fix these but needed remote access to do this. He first pointed me to a web site for windowssolutionworld.com and referred to telephone number 01274792884 as their contact which looked OK. He downloaded software to enable connection and then connected. It was when the guy (he said he was Adam Smith in the chat window) started defragging my hard drive I was suspicious, and terminated his session by turning off the router. Not sure what damage has been done, but restored computer to a previous state to get rid of any trace of possible problem files.
Anyone else had this recently?
I don't believe the guy has any control over my machine, but I have changed passwords just in case. The hard disk full image roll-back cleared all traces of his activity. All seems OK and I'm checking other symptoms regularly.
