  suedeblue 15:51 06 Feb 2007

Can anyone help me speed up my windows xp home edition. It has been running very slow for about 2 weeks.
IE takes 10 seconds to load as does my computer.
I have a wireless router for second pc connected.
I have not installed anything recently.
Any help would be appreciated.

When was the last time you defragged your system?

Try using Diskeeper LITE (click here) to defrag your system with

When did you last do some PC housekeeping?

Un-installing all those programs you NEVER use.

Disabling unnecessary programs/processes which run at start up through msconfig?

Defragged the HDD?

Run full AV and anti-malware scans?

Mattyc_92 and Jackcoms
Cleared cookies about a week ago disk defrag analysis stated did not need to do defrag, but maybe I do.
Cleared many unused icons form my desktop.
I'll try defrag and diskeeper and let you both know what happens.

Do you have Spyware installed and if so, when did you last do a full scan. If no Spyware, you may need to consider installing as Jackcoms intimated above.

You could also try system restore.

1. Software

a) Clear out all temporay files and folders -- use Crap Cleaner click here

b) Scan for malware spyware and viruses --Free Anti Spyware :-
Adaware click here
Spybot S&D click here
Spywareblaster click here
a2 click here
Windows Defender click here

Free Antivirus software
Avast4 click here
AVG antivirus click here

c) Clean the registry -- Free Registry cleaners :-
RegscrubXP click here
Regseeker click here
TweakNow RegCleaner 1.3.2 click here
Easycleaner click here ( Use with care, It advises you to back up the registry first, this is a good idea as it cleans rather aggressively. )

d) Pagefile (Virtual Memory) -- Rght click MY Computer - select propeties - Advanced tab - Performance - advanced tab - Virtual memory click change, you can put the page file on a differnt drive (if you have one), click custom size and set Initial size to one and a half times the amount of memory you have fitted i.e. 512MB memory = set to 768MB, set maximum to double your memory amount i.e. 512MB memory = 1024MB click ok.
If your hard drive is full and there is not enough room for the pagefile this can slow down, freeze or even cause the PC to crash (restart).

e) Cut down on the programs that load at startup -- Start - Run type msconfig - startup tab- untick everything except for firewall, antivirus and antispyware

and the services that run in the background. click here

Its been a while since i had a slow pc, ie 15min boot, and your still posting that thread, altough very help full, suedeblue doing all the advise of fruit bat does work, but in the end my problem was a faulty hard disk, wich i discovered after months of scans etc , but this will not be your problem

"Cleared many unused icons form my desktop"

Which will have achieved precisely nothing.

It's the programs you need to get rid of (if you don't intend to use them) - not the icons.

  Totally-braindead 16:47 06 Feb 2007

Agree with Jackcoms anything on the desktop is a shortcut to the main program that is all, the program is still there.
