Windows XP OEM reinstall

  bvk 16:54 26 Oct 2007

I have a Compaq Presario with Windows XP preloaded.(and a recovery disk)
I understand that if I replace the motherboard the recovery disk will not reinstall.
Is there any way around this?
If I just leave the installation on the hard drive will it work?
Should I be able to get a new installation disk from PC world without having to purchase XP in full.

No you can't reactivate Windows OEM copy on a different motherboard (so MS tells me) and most wise men will tell you that you probably won't be able to get away with it by retaiing the same hard drive.

Yes if you do this first:-

If you reactivate by phone and tell MS that the motherboard died and that you could not get the same make and model they will usually give you new number, I have done it twice once for me and once for brother-in-law but do as Fruit Bat /\0/\ suggests first or there is a big risk of conflict of motherboard drivers between the old and new drivers.

I just used a friends full XP disc and did a fresh install, And then put my own OEM code in and when it was done i just put the new motherboard drivers on.

I may well ask MS for a new code-or buy an OEM disc
Thanks all for reply
