Hello. Can anyone please help. I have XP on my PC and this morning it started loading but stopped mid-flow and left just a blank screen (it stopped before getting to the signing in box). Bad news or might it be solvable? Mny thanks

Can you tap F8 (F5) and get to mneu options ? select last Known Good Configuation and see if it boots properly.

next try booting to safe mode and do a repair as per option 1

If cannot boot to F8 Menu / safemode then do a repair as per option 2

Repair XP

OPTION 1 - Repair XP by replacing corrupt files Type

sfc /scannow

in the run box, press enter and let system file checker find and replace missing / corrupt file in windows and explorer. This will take awhile to complete and you may be asked for the CD to be in the drive if windows is not preinstalled on the hard drive.

sfc /scannow problems

OPTION 2 - Repair XP by install over the top of existing system

  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

  1. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

  1. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

  2. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

  3. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Start the PC and keep tapping F8 key on booting. Hopefully you'll come to the Advanced Boot Options menu. If so this link will give you the best options,

Note, some PCs will need F5 on boot up but if you use F8 then when you come to boot priority screen, then ignore and keep tapping F8. You'll get to the Advanced Boot Options where you can select Last Known Good Configuration.

See if that works.

Or better still take heed of Fruit Bat /\0/\'s advice.... :)

Tip, When a pc can't be shut down in the correct manner: To close down and switch off the computer safely hold in the power on button on pc tower (or on laptop) for several seconds - usually takes about 10 secs and then it will shut itself down and switch off. That is better than using wall plug which doesn't do the harddrive any good and may damage it.
