windows xp lost ip address config

A friend of mine has lost internet connectivity, when I checked it out he has lost his ip config address. I checked with his provider and followed all his advice, tried in the command prompt ipconfig /renew - no joy. I tried uninstalling the USB hub and letting it reinstall on reboot, still no joy. I tried system restore but he has no valid restore points just checkpoints. When I tried to restore from these it came back saying no changes had been made.I am now faced with the options of a) Completely wiping the hard drive and reinstalling windows + sp 2 (which he is running)+ drivers and all his software (a days work for him/me)
or b) Repairing the installation from the windows xp disk.

My question is has option b) got any pitfalls I may need to know about (I had a look on the MS website but found it a bit of a needle in a haystack job) Can anyone help??

b) is straightforward click here but you will need to install SP2 after doing this.

It might be worth giving click here a go first.
