Windows XP home shutdown problems

  tom palmer 17:04 23 Sep 2004

When I click "restart" "turn off" or "standy" to shutdown windows xp home edition nothing happens and I have to turn the computer off by holding down the power button.

I have the fully up to date McAfee Security Suite. But I recently added a Logitech multimedia keyboard which has a standby shortcut button on it. I have also installed Service Pack 2. I think shutting down worked fine up until somewhere around these changes.

Any thoughts on how to get shutting down working again properly are greatly appreciated.

Try Start/run/type sfc /scannow (nb the space between sfc and scannow)you may need your XP CD

Thank you for the help rawprawn,

Bizarrely, Removing the keyboard from the USB port turning off the computer and reconnecting the keyboard into the PS/2 port with a USB to PS/2 adapter has solved my shutdown problems.

I don't know why a keyboard connected via USB should cause this bug in XP.

Thank you very much VoG, if only Logitech placed something about this on their website!
