Windows XP home, "Send To" fault

  Bigtoe 16:28 05 Feb 2003

In windows xp home edition, when I am in Windows explorer and access the "send to" feature, the screen flickers and everything disappearsexept the wallpaper. Then the icons reload but explorer has shut down. The clipboard will have lost everything on it. It's like starting from scratch.

Put your windows CD into the CD ROM and hold the shift key (the one with arrow pointing up, just above the Ctrl key on the left of your keyboard). Holding shift for a few seconds will stop the Windows CD from auto running, but the drive will still spin up to read the disk then spin back down again. Once it has spun down you can release the shift key.

Now click Start/All Programs/Accessories and choose Command Prompt. Type in

sfc /scannow

and hit enter. This will check and replace any damaged system files.

If that still doesn't solve the problem, download the Windows 95 Powertoys from this PC ADVISOR site.

Then extract the files to the desktop with Winzip or similar, isolate the two Send To items, right click the INF one and click Install. Then close the two windows that appear.

Put the two send to items in a folder called Send To and put it somewhere like Program Files for example, then delete all the other files that appeared on the desktop.

Now go to Add/Remove programs and see the Send To item. Double click that line and a list of Send Tos will appear, Uncheck them all except Any Folder, then close Add/Remove.

Now whenever you use Send To, you'll have an option to either copy or mave any file to any location in your computer. Like so many things in Windows 9X, it's better than the XP issue.
